Managed to get out on hardwater today! First time I've ever been on ice before Thanksgiving. Ice thickness varied from 1.25"-1.5". Fishin was slow though and my buddy and I only had about an hour before work to try. Some PICS------>

That video is too funny. If you test the ice, by doing a belly flop on it....you might be a redneck!

I just wanted to go fishin and anybody that knows me knows I'm not going to put my life in danger for fish. First, the channel is no more than 4' deep and I was with a buddy. Second, I've never fallen threw when I had my spud bar. Trust me, I know what I can and can't walk on! I've been in the icy cold water over my head before, it's not fun! I don't want to do it again. Only weighing 170 helps too! Let's get together this winter and have a derby! Maybe just a for fun braggin derby so we can get a bunch of you guys out there. Maybe have it at a bigger pond or small lake where we know we'll slay em! I can't wait to test out Deeps' potential for bass/pike.

I was suprised when alex, tracy, james, and i went out and found out a lot of the forest preserves are frozen. We ended up fishing deep quarry all day... and i had missed 2 fish early because of drag reasons... (dont ask why) and we pretty much just bsed all day. We did scout out some lakes also one in kane county but they were all covered in ice. hopefully they'll thaw out the next couple days so i can do some late fall fishn.... otherwise i guess its time for me to hook up with jp and do some chicago river warm water discharge fishn.

:) Hear ya Ryan, I never ice fished, so 1.5" sounds crazy to me...I have heard stories by other ice anglers and they say that "fresh ice" can hold ya at 1". They also say you don't go out with out partner or you stay shallow. I definitely want to learn this year so when you got time or need extra "lifeguard" let me know.

uh ya..... i'll wait till it gets a little thicker before we hook up ryan. also, deep sounds like it would be cool to ice fish.

Close to 4" on Pistakee's South Bay. Tough fishin with this darn cold front. About 6 others out there today as well....Heard there's good ice all around the Chain right now, but there is still open water on most of the lakes. If the weatherman is correct we're gonna have 10" in a week!!!
